第2回 Rice「米」

日本語を英語にしてみましょう！

Tim：日本とアメリカの間で米の自由化が問題となってますね。

         The free trade of rice is a big issue between Japan and the U.S., isn't it ?

Akira：そうですね。２国間の貿易問題のひとつにすぎないですね。

         Yes. The rice issue is only one of the trade problems between the two nations.

Tim：日本ではお米がとても高いと聞きましたが。

        I've heard rice in Japan is very expensive.

Akira：そうですね。10キロで5000円ぐらいします。

       Yes. It costs about five thousand yen for ten kilograms.

Tim：ここでは、10キロで1000円ぐらいですよ。

      Here it probably is about one thousand yen for ten kilograms.

      日本の米とレギュラー米との違いはなんですか？

　  Are there any differences between Japanese rice and "regular" rice ?

Akira：ふううの粒の長い米は、インディカと呼ばれて、日本の米は、ジャポニ カと呼ばれて、日本、韓国、台湾などで典型的に食べられる特別な種類 の米です。

      The regular long-grain rice is called "Indica."

      Japanese rice is called "Japonica" and is a special kind typically eaten in Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Tim：カリフォルニアライスは、日本の種類の米ですよね。

      California rice is a Japanese-kind of rice, isn't it ?

Akira：はい、日系人が最初にカリフォルニアに到着して以来、ジャポニカ米を育ててきました。

      Yes, Japanese-American farmers have been growing Japonica rice since they first arrived in California.

Tim：では、なぜ、日本は、カリフォルニアから米を輸入しないのですか？

      Then, why doesn't Japan import rice from California ?

Akira：日本政府は、少なくとも主食において、自給自足を維持する政策のために、米貿易の自由化に対して、強く反対している。

      The Japanese Government is srrongly against the liberalization of the rice trade because of their policy of maintaining self-sufficientry in at least one staple food.
